The South African telecommunications industry has experienced rapid growth driven by technological advancements and an increasing demand for innovative services. As competition intensifies, effective Human Resource Management (HRM) practices are vital for fostering innovation. However, many telecommunications firms struggle to align their HRM strategies with innovation goals, leading to diminished employee performance and missed market opportunities. Despite the significant literature on HRM and innovation, little research focuses on the South African telecommunications sector, particularly technology startups. This study aims to address this gap by examining how tailored HRM practices can enhance innovation within South African telecommunications firms, using Vodacom, Rain, and Cell C as case studies. A closed-ended questionnaire was distributed to 30 senior management personnel, with data analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The findings demonstrate a positive relationship between recruitment, training, communication, and compensation strategies and innovation. These results provide practical insights for firms seeking to optimize HRM practices to drive long-term innovation and competitiveness in the evolving telecommunications landscape.
